Welcome to our school gardening page. Here you will find news about our school allotment in the walled garden in Ickworth Park, together with information about our other gardening activities.
Mrs Cook takes children from Years 2,3,4,5 and 6, to our allotment every Monday afternoon, from March to November. We sow seeds, transplant seedlings, water and tend the plants, and then we harvest the produce we have grown. We learn to prepare the ground, make compost, hoe and weed and protect our plants. Everything is grown organically and we bring the fruit and vegetables back to school for Mrs Raven to cook for school dinner.
Each year we hold a Harvest Festival in St Mary's Church in Ickworth Park. The children help to decorate the church with a selection of fruit and vegetables grown on our allotment. Mrs Raven always bakes a traditional harvest loaf. This year we had a wonderful display and we made £64 when we sold our produce after the service. The school choir sang some harvest songs and read some poems.
This year's "Big Dig" in March was very well supported. Lots of families came along to help us to prepare the allotment for the new season. We managed to dig the whole plot, change the soil in the poly-tunnel, spread compost over the beds, make some scarecrows and plant some potatoes. We all had great fun!
Early May update.
The weather has been cold and our plants are growing slowly. So far we have planted new and maincrop potatoes, peas, broad beans, carrots, parsnips, salad leaves, beetroot, spinach, Swiss chard and spring onions. There are still lots of seedlings waiting to be planted.
The rhubarb is growing well and we have sold some of it to raise money for our gardening projects.
Look out for produce on sale every Friday afternoon!
